Abriendo Caminos (Opening Pathways) began in Cali in 2017, to contribute to creation of more inclusive and peaceful environments. Its initial focus was based on interrupting and diminishing violence, inspired by the “Cure Violence” program developed by Dr. Gary Slutkin in the city of Chicago.  This pioneering effort promotes a vison of a society able to coexist harmoniously even in the most vulnerable areas.

Abriendo Caminos (Opening Pathways) is centered on five essential pillars:  1. Interruption of violence and conflict mediation; 2. Community education; 3. Social inclusion; 4. Training trainers; 5. Registration and follow-up.  These elements work together to confront challenges present in vulnerable areas, offering a pathway of support and hope that transcends borders and barriers.

Clear results are visible on the streets of neighborhoods and areas which have reduced violence.  Successful mediation has taken place in 12,000 conflicts since 2021, leading to the program´s extension to the cities of Buenaventura y Palmira. 735 young people have received guidance, of whom 70% achieved at least one of their stated goals, and 46.39% returned to basic education or job training.
