Elena Garcés’ book, “Colombia Women” The Struggle out of Silence, was the inspiration for creating the transmedia digital platform Colomb!anas: una BiografÃa Colectiva (Colombian Women: a Collective Biography). So far 45 women from different parts of the country have recounted their stories and experiences. They all address the meaning of being a woman in Colombia and the impact of the social context that surrounds them. These audiovisual stories that have been disseminated since 2017, invite reflection and encourage other women who want to share in a similar way their own stories.
The program seeks to raise awareness among the public about the importance of gender equality and the role of women in Colombia, as mentioned by Daniela DÃaz, coordinator of the project:
“The interesting thing about these stories is that they generate categories that are not predetermined but arise as the stories are constructed and cover topics such as first love, menstruation, education, professional life, being a woman in Colombia, gender stereotypes, spirituality and beliefs, and even issues of violence and sexual abuse.”
For this occasion, Colomb!anas, in alliance with the Universidad Autónoma de Occidente and its Institute for Sustainability Studies, produced and launched 20 new podcasts on “Women in Science and the Field”.
